I still recall the afternoon I had seen the trailer of this film and it looked nothing short of a delicacy. Influential actors like Ranvir Shorey, Kalki Koechlin, Gulshan Devaiah and late Om Puri gave the film a powerful look. Looking to thrill and surprise you with every frame, A Death in the Gunj is a cinema lover’s paradise.

This journey kicks off from a road trip to the city of McCluskieganj in Bihar where we see a typical Bengali family visiting their parents. The film makes sure that the suspense and silence always go hand in hand as Konkana Sensharma follows a sublime and grim tone throughout the journey. As the train gather pace we are hurriedly introduced to all the travellers of this journey with minimal background information. As we move further into the film, the director brings out details and intricacies between characters that helps you understand the film better.

From elaborating on characters to detailing upon their relationships with each other, Konkana Sensharma takes the cake with her finely written script and screenplay. In its journey to the climax, the film does tend to slacken a bit in pace as we see the focus switch from character to character. After a slow yet eventually pleasant first half, the second part of this ride picks up with sudden pace.

Despite the slow and steady tone Konkana Sensharma assures there are calculated pauses and diversions in the story. With immense perfection Konkana brings out the best of her side characters of Shutu, Vikram and Mimi essayed by Vikrant Massey, Ranveer Shorey and Kalki respectively that end up being the highlights of the film. A death in the Gunj, unlike most Bollywood thrillers, does not take the liberty of meddling with the script to explore the extraordinary drama and attention seeking tactics. The essence of the film lies in its emotions, momentary romance, suspense, simplicity and perfect detailing of characters and events.

After dazzling us with all her skills, the Bollywood diva ends her directorial debut with a bang that leaves you stunned. With a rather unexpected twist in the tale Konkana Sensharma ends the film the way no one could have expected it to, making it a spectacular experience all together. In the end, A death in the Gunj is not your regular Bollywood drama but its a treat for those who have admired and lived for the thriller genre.
